10 DCEU Revelations From Zack Snyder
6. Three Crosses
Snyder's not done with the Christ allegories yet.
So Man of Steel went to great lengths to position Superman as a Jesus parallel and then Batman v. Superman's finale saw the last son of Krypton sacrificing himself to save mankind from a monster of their own creation. He's not exactly crucified, but the writing is certainly on the wall.
Following Superman's death, Snyder subjects the audience to several minutes of slow-motion grieving, the first of which are spent showing Bruce, Diana, and Lois recovering his body. In one of the most grandiose of these shots, there are three crosses hanging in the background, the middle of which being the tallest. In the Bible, Jesus was crucified with two thieves, one hanging on each side of him. One a believer, and one not.
When a fan on social media pointed the three crosses out, Snyder responded by saying
"That's a reference to Justice League 2"
Snyder went on add #untilitwasnt in a response tweet. insinuating that that is no longer the plan. Superman's Jesus-like rise from the tomb aside, Snyder seems to be confirming here that Justice League 2 was set to kill off two other characters, one a believer in Superman, and one not.
