How He Died

As one of the new characters brought into Phase 3, T'Challa was killed off in Infinity War to make sure there's more space to tell the stories of the original Avengers primarily in Endgame. He turned to dust in the face of Okoye, his personal bodyguard, which is like smashing eggs for effect in the face of a chicken.

But Wait...

As with the other MCU characters who have announced sequels, we know T'Challa is coming back because Marvel Studios have already officially confirmed that Black Panther 2 is in development. Of course it is: the original movie made more than a billion dollars and was universally praised - abandoning the franchise at that point would be idiotic.

Will It Be Explained?

Again, yes it will. If you want to speculate at this point, your best bet would definitely be time travel and the survivors averting the Decimation somehow. In that new timeline, Black Panther will never have been killed and Okoye won't have to suffer the special brand of torture of seeing her liege die in extreme close-up.
