10 Debunked Movie Myths You Totally Believe

4. Steven Spielberg Was The Director - Poltergeist

Poltergeist is one of the greats of horror - an ageless classic of terror and unsettling imagery. Tobe Hooper is credited as the director of the film, but for a long while it was believed that blockbuster machine Steven Spielberg was behind the horror classic.

According to reports, Spielberg had a contractual obligation to direct another movie after the release of E.T: The Extra-Terrestrial for Universal Studios, and that Poltergeist was that film. Many cast and crew members also came forward at the time to say that the director's role in the film was much larger than Hooper's.

However, despite Spielberg admitting to helping Hooper out with the film, both filmmakers have remained adamant that Hooper was the true director of the film. True enough, the credits rank Hooper as the director whilst Spielberg is seen as a producer and one of the screenwriters.

There's no doubt that Spielberg helped out with the creative drive of the film, but to completely discredit Hooper's influence on the movie is taking things a step too far.
