10 Deceptively Innocent Movies With Incredibly Dark Moments
9. Thor: Ragnarok
While it may not fit the textbook definition of "innocent", Thor: Ragnarok is one of Marvel's more lighthearted entries. The third Thor-centric instalment is renowned for its consistent comic relief and colourful tone, with director Taika Waititi injecting his infectious sense of humour and wit into proceedings from the very get-go.
However, it's worth noting that without the unrelenting comedy on display, Thor: Ragnarok features so many dark moments that it would be a frontrunner for the MCU's most depressing film. Thor loses his father Odin in the early goings, before the majority of the Asgardians - including the Warriors Three - are brutally dispatched by Cate Blanchett's Hela in a bloody purge, with the remaining Asgardians forced into hiding to avoid intergalactic genocide.
There isn't even a happy ending to fall back on! The prophecy of Ragnarok ultimately comes true, destroying Thor's home and turning the entire Asgardian population into refugees. Almost unbelievably, it somehow gets even worse from there. With Thor attempting to guide his people to Earth for a new beginning, any sense of hope technically doesn't even last past the post-credits scene, with their vessel being intercepted by a large spacecraft.
2018's Infinity War reveals that said spacecraft belongs to Thanos, who massacres most of the remaining survivors. Even Korg's hilarity ultimately can't distract from the morbid material born in the purportedly comedic Ragnarok.
