10 Deleted Scenes That Explain Confusing Horror Movie Moments

5. The Shining - Ullman Is In On The Joke

One sure thing about The Shining is that the Overlook Hotel is a heavily haunted location. There are ghosts within the walls who can call out to people, affecting them from miles and miles away. This is evident in the early parts of the film, with Tony warning Danny about the danger they are soon to face. How did Tony know about this?

An alternate ending to the film exists that goes a way to explaining that the ghosts within the walls of the Overlook have influence outside the grounds. When Wendy and Danny are recuperating in hospital, Mr. Ullmann, the manager of the Overlook, arrives to check on them. As he leaves, he bounces a ball to Danny - the same ball that Jack Torrance had been bouncing earlier in the film.

This simple act suggests that Ullmann, like Grady and many of the party guests in the hotel, have always been there, and never left while the Torrance family stayed.

If Ullmann was a spectre of the hotel itself, or simply a ghost stuck within the wall, then he knew exactly what he was signing the Torrance family up for - and Danny and Wendy were always going to be on Jack's chopping block.

Grim.
