10 Deleted Scenes That Explain Confusing Star Trek Moments

4. Star Trek (2009) - Kirk's Childhood

STAR TREK NERO
Paramount Pictures

The Mystery:

Where did young James T. Kirk get a 200 year old antique car?

The Deleted Scene:

This scene actually explains a lot about the Kelvin Timeline's Kirk and how the death of his father (who survived in the Prime Universe) affected his life. It also gives a little more context as for why, in the theatrical cut, we see young Jimmy absconding with a 200 year old Corvette and rocking out to 200 year old hip hop.

In the deleted scene, young Jimmy Kirk is caught between his brother, George, and his uncle, Frank, engaged in a shouting match. Jimmy tries to stop him, but George runs away, telling Jimmy that he's the good brother – the one who gets good grades and is good at taking orders. After George leaves, Uncle Frank demands that Jimmy wash his late father's car, which he does, until he finds the keys and decides to do something rebellious.

In the finished film, we drop in after this scene has taken place and while George makes a brief appearance, he's referred to as "Johnny" and likely no longer intended to be related to Kirk.

Nevertheless, this deleted material refers back to Star Trek: The Original Series and its depiction of Kirk as a studious young man and not the rebel without a cause as seen in JJ Abrams' reboot flick. Here, we find out that after the death of his father, Kirk's home life is a mess, his brother runs away, and while he was a good kid, these events pushed him to be the "genius-level repeat offender" we see played by Chris Pine later in the film.
