The 2009 Star Trek movie was Abrams attempt to revitalise the series, because he's a giant nerd. His nerdom paid off big time though, as the film was so successful it spawned two sequels.

The baddie in the first movie is Nero, a Romulan played by Eric Bana. Nero is from the future, having been sucked backwards through time by a supernova.
