10 Deleted Scenes That Made Movies Way Darker
3. Peggy Brandt's Death - The Mask
1994's Jim Carrey-starring superhero comedy may seem like a zany mug-fest on the surface, but it expertly melds its wacky hijinks with a darker film noir undercurrent.
The Dark Horse comic on which the film is based isn't remotely family-friendly, so it's little surprise that some rejigging had to take place during post-production in order to iron out the movie's tone.
This included the removal of a scene which explains the sudden exit of reporter Peggy Brandt (Amy Yasbeck). In the final film, she betrays protagonist Stanley Ipkiss (Carrey) to gangster Dorian Tyrell (Peter Greene) and just...disappears for the rest of the movie.
But a scene was shot where Peggy gets murdered by Tyrell, who hurls her into a working printing press.
This leads to the cartoonishly gnarly moment where newspapers are printed announcing her death in a "freak accident," the ink tainted red by her blood, complete with a picture of Peggy's face moments before she dies.
The grisly implication of the scene is naturally pretty heavy for a film marketed at children, so it's an understandable omission, even if the scene does explain a frustrating hanging plot thread.
