5. What Happened To Malcolm? - War For The Planet Of The Apes

The Mystery:

The previous film, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, ends with human Malcolm (Jason Clarke) and his family taking leave of Caesar (Andy Serkis), who is preparing for all-out war with the human military.

Malcolm's fate is never addressed in the third (and final?) entry into the series, leaving fans to ponder what became of him in the end.

The Deleted Scene:

A brilliantly-acted and deliciously intense deleted scene reveals that Malcolm actually ended up crossing paths with The Colonel (Woody Harrelson), with the Colonel explaining that Malcolm tried to convince him to seek out Caesar for a diplomatic solution.

But of course, the Colonel simply shot Malcolm dead, and that's that. While in many ways it's an extremely unsatisfying end for the character and it does seem rather coincidental that Malcolm and the Colonel would ever meet, but for fans unable to bear the ambiguity, the answer is there.

Due it not being an official part of the canon, though, those who reject it are also free to do so unimpeded.
