10 Deleted Scenes Which Totally Change Classic Films

8. Mr Orange Knew Mr White Was A Cop Killer In Reservoir Dogs

Miramax Films

Quentin Tarantino is a meticulous screenwriter and director, who pours over multiple drafts of each of his films before release, and spends a buttload of time in the edit suite afterwards, making sure that his movies are absolutely perfect. Which we appreciate because, more often than not, they are pretty close to perfect! Except Death Proof. That's another of our big Ouzo targets. Anyway, QT is pretty brutal when it comes to excising unnecessary scenes and flab from his flicks - or at least he was pre-Kill Bill - which means that any missing parts of his movies are probably missing for a reason. Like this scene from Reservoir Dogs that would have changed its central, most tragic relationship.

Besides the violence, cool dialogue and banging soundtrack, the greatest triumph of Reservoir Dogs is that amongst all that style, there's a surprising amount of substance. Specifically the friendship between Tim Roth's Mr Orange and Harvey Keitel's Mr White. The film opens with the pair speeding away from their bungled diamond store robbery, Orange bleeding in the back seat and White taking on a paternal role, telling him he's going to be okay. From there all of White's actions are about trying to save Orange's life as he bleeds to death on the floor of their dusty safe house.

The tragedy of which is, of course, that Mr Orange is the undercover cop everybody is so sure ratted them out. White's concern for Orange's well being is real, but you know it would disappear as soon as he realised he was a pig. In fact, that's exactly what happens at the end! All of which would all have a different tone - and be slightly less believable - if Tarantino had left in this deleted scene. If Roth's character had known beforehand that Keitel's career criminal already had a few cop killings on his record, he might not have been so keen to cosy up to him - although it would also have ratcheted up the tension a fair bit...
