10 Deleted Sci-Fi Movie Scenes You Need To See
7. Donnie Darko - Donnie's Grisly Death
Richard Kelly’s warped teen drama/black comedy/sci-fi sort-of-time-travel movie is in a league of its own genre-wise (clearly), and plenty of punters were left walking out of the multiplex knowing only three things for sure:
1. That Jake Gyllenhall kid will go places, 2. That rabbit was freaky as all hell, and, 3. That made no sense.
The thing is, Donnie Darko does add up upon patient re-watch, and ultimately the tender, clever drama works well as a story of sacrifice and coming-of-age set against the backdrop of small town suburban Americana and soundtracked by some of the 80s' best alternative hits.
The enigmatic ending, however, was almost a lot less subtle, with a deleted scene consisting of a shot showing Donnie gorily impaled by the wreckage of the crashed plane, thus confirming his implied fate in no uncertain terms. The film's esoteric appeal would have been badly blunted by this bit of unsubtle gore, so it's just as well Kelly opted to cut in this case.
