Picking a number one from this list of vile and appalling human beings was always going to be tricky, but for pure evil and unpredictability, Colonel Hans Landa has to top the pile. Christoph Waltz's Oscar-winning depiction of Landa is one of the performances of the century so far, and it has helped him become one of the most sought-after actors in the world right now. Landa, nicknamed The Jew Hunter is cocky, calculated and smarmy throughout Quentin Tarantino's World War II epic. He often comes across as nice enough, but you know that that lingering evil inside him is always ready to emerge at some point. He has great power, and is not afraid to use it. From that memorable opening scene, when he ruthlessly orders the killing of a family hidden under floorboards, to the strangling of German actress Bridget von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger), Landa is an abysmal person who uses his charm to lull people into a false sense of security. There are more brutal, psychopathic characters on this list, but none are as despicable as Landa. Are any of these despicable characters redeemable?
