10 Devastating Off-Screen Movie Deaths
2. Dominic Kearney - The Banshees Of Inisherin
Behind the relatively simple and humorous narrative of Brendan Gleeson's Colm abruptly wanting to stop being friends with Colin Farrell's Pádraic, there was a far more heartbreaking story surrounding Dominic (Barry Keoghan).
The young man was something of an outcast on Inisherin, he was abused by his father, and even when he looked up to Pádraic as something of a role model, he was ultimately let down. In spite of this however, Dominic took everything in stride, and was arguably one of the cheerier characters on the island.
Having built up the courage to ask if Siobhán (Kerry Condon) could ever see herself falling for someone like him, he was knocked back. She did it in as gentle a way as she possibly could, but a rejection is a rejection, no matter how kind the words that come with it. Dominic's dream was crushed.
After Siobhán left Inisherin for the mainland, Pádraic wrote his sister a letter, detailing, among other things, Dominic's death. He told that the young man had fallen in the river, but it seems more likely that he jumped after his conversation with Siobhán. He had been dealt a tough hand in life, and this appeared to have been the final straw. That last bit of hope gone.
