10 Directors Who Need To Get Back On The Big Screen
7. Gary Oldman
Yes, that Gary Oldman. The Oscar nominated thespian is one of the most diverse actors of his generation. Of his acting pedigree there is no doubt; but this list concerns the people on the other side of the camera. In 1997 Oldman wrote and directed his single directorial piece so far, the violent and bleak British drama Nil By Mouth, an unflinching and brutal portrayal of the nastier side of life. Starring Ray Winstone, as a conflicted but ultimately violent and abusive husband, Nil By Mouth is a brilliant piece of raw cinema set in the council estates of Britain that leaves real emotional wounds. Why Oldman has gone another seventeen years without stepping back behind the camera is a mystery. With a debut as strong and affecting as Nil By Mouth we need to see what else Oldman is capable of, and having gained another seventeen years experience, watching and working with some of the best in the business, you can only imagine that Oldman has honed is directorial skills. If he can produce again what he brought with Nil By Mouth it will only serve to enrich the tapestry of the big screen. Oldman is attached to a film set for release in 2016 called Flying Horse; hopefully it makes it to our screens and he won't take another seventeen years for the next one.
