Since the release of his debut feature in 2005, West has gone on to earn a reputation as one of the horror genre's brightest talents. The writer/director/producer/editor (and occasional actor and cinematographer) is still only 34, but is currently shooting his seventh full-length feature, which sees him step further out of his wheelhouse than ever before.

With the exception of straight-to-video sequel Cabin Fever 2 (which he has since completely disowned), the likes of The House Of The Devil, The Innkeepers and The Sacrament show a director who understands both his audience and the horror genre as a whole, both embracing and subverting the established tropes to deliver effective thrills, while upcoming In A Valley Of Violence sees West exploring new territory, with the movie his first outside the horror genre.

The revenge Western is also his biggest project to date in terms of budget and star power, with a cast including Ethan Hawke, John Travolta and Karen Gillian. If the director can pull it off his most mainstream effort so far, then it could signal the beginning of an eventual shift into commercial territory. West should look no further than James Wan for inspiration, who made the transition from directing low-budget horror to one of the biggest movies in history look easy.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
