Nicolas Winding Refn has built up a hugely eclectic filmography (including an Agatha Christie adaptation for British TV), but has not yet made the jump to a big-budget feature, despite being attached to several such projects over the last few years. With a distinct visual style, strong grasp on character and a preference for darker subject matter, perhaps the Danish director is unwilling to make the compromises to his vision that are often required in blockbuster filmmaking.

As well as being attached to a Logan's Run remake for several years, Winding Refn also wanted to direct a modern update of the Dr.Jekyll and Mr. Hyde story with Keanu Reeves, publicly declared his interest in making a Wonder Woman movie, was courted by Channing Tatum to direct Magic Mike and dropped out of talks to helm Denzel Washington vehicle The Equalizer.

Winding Refn has proven adept at working in multiple genres ever since directing the Pusher trilogy in his homeland; prison biopic Bronson, abstract Viking movie Valhalla Rising, modern noir Drive, the incredibly divisive Only God Forgives and upcoming horror The Neon Demon are clearly the works of a versatile director that refuses to be pigeonholed, which could go some way to explaining why he has often come close to directing a studio project but hasn't yet taken the plunge.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
