10 Directors Who Could Save Dying Movies Franchises

8. Taika Watiti - Pirates Of The Caribbean

There are few directors working today who just radiate personality quite like Taika Watiti. This charm and charisma is embedded in each of his movies, and makes each of them have a big dumb grin on your face the whole time. He thrives in creating small, quirky hyper-realities that feel distinct, but not totally unfamiliar from our own. Even once he ventured into the world of blockbusters, the charm and imagination were not lost.

His penchant for vibrant, personality-driven films would fit right in with a certain pirate-centric franchise that lost its sense of character and adventure somewhere during its second sequel. PotC became a shell of its former self, fresh out of new ideas and lacking in any promising direction. That's where Watiti could come to the rescue. Instead of another director trying to fit within the convoluted continuity of this universe, let Watiti take the franchise by the reigns and bring it back to the exceedingly-promising status the series once had.

Re-launch the series with a brand new cast full of talent suited to his vision (sorry Captain Jack) and full creative freedom, then Disney will get an actual reliable franchise that's not just MCU-related or animated.
