10 Directors Who Could Save Dying Movies Franchises

9. Michael Dougherty - Pacific Rim

Pirates Of The Caribbean Jack Sparrow Taika Waititi

Michael Dougherty had a difficult task with this year's Godzilla: King of the Monsters. He had to effectively follow-up the 2014 Godzilla with a sequel that answered fan criticisms of that film's minimal onscreen monster-bashing, boring human subplots, yet still ensuring that its predecessor's major positives weren't lost and that it set up the movie surrounding Godzilla's battle with Kong that would come out a year after.

Long story short, he defied the odds and succeeded by delivering a crowd-pleasing monster-centric experience that paid homage to the franchise's roots while also mirroring the predecessor's focus on the beauty within destruction.

It was rather similar to the original Pacific Rim movie made by Guillermo Del Toro. PR ditched any sense of dramatic heft and stuck with campy fun that sought beauty through its production design and plenty of stunning visuals. When it came time to make a PR sequel though, GDT left and all of the artfulness behind the franchise followed suit, leaving a hollow, heartless sequel that lacked its prequel's artistry.

In order for the series to make a comeback, the creative team must adopt the same thought and care that GDT offered.. Who better to do so than the man responsible for revitalizing the Godzilla franchise? He understands how to entertain audiences and he's quite aware of how to have fun with some big ol' monsters.
