10 Directors Who Could Save Dying Movies Franchises

6. Zack Snyder - Alien

Pirates Of The Caribbean Jack Sparrow Taika Waititi
Warner Bros.

His name is pure vitriol for some, but there's simply no denying Zack Snyder's ability to make an impression. 300 redefined what comic book adaptations looked and felt like, he adapted the most renowned graphic novel into a film and did it justice (when many others failed to do so, and he brought the DC universe's holy trinity onto the big screen. Snyder goes bold on whatever project he takes on and isn't afraid to take chances.

Meanwhile, the Alien franchise, known once for being incredibly daring and fresh, finds itself in something of a creative purgatory. Prometheus approached an interesting new direction only for Alien: Covenant to embrace the bad ideas of its predecessor and defuse all franchise momentum. Ridley Scott, for all that he's done for the Alien brand, needs to step aside and let another creative take over.

Snyder likely has no interest in hopping back into the comic book genre, but his directing style could very well fit a horror/thriller. His work on Dawn of the Dead shows a keen awareness of how to use and release tension effectively, while his use of imagery and strong, profound themes throughout all of his work would fit in beautifully with Alien. Best of all, Snyder would take the initiative to head towards unfamiliar territory like Prometheus (almost) did. Some may not believe it, but he could provide the fresh direction that Ridley Scott can no longer offer.
