10 Directors Who Just Made Their Worst Movie

6. Eli Roth - Borderlands

Megalopolis Bad
Lionsgate

Eli Roth is certainly another filmmaker whose output is wildly inconsistent quality-wise, the likes of Cabin Fever, Hostel, The Green Inferno, and Knock Knock splitting critics and audiences alike firmly down the middle. Hot off the heels of delivering his best-reviewed film to date with last year's Thanksgiving, however, Roth turned in his biggest critical flop: Borderlands.

Roth admittedly always seemed like an odd fit to adapt the hit video game into a movie, and coupled with a torrid post-production period lasting over three years - during which Roth was replaced for reshoots - the tealeaves seemed to suggest the action-adventure tentpole was doomed to fail.

Indeed, Borderlands scored just 10% on Rotten Tomatoes while barely recouping 25% of its budget theatrically - a consequence of the atrocious script, poor casting choices, and generally lackluster filmmaking on offer.

While nobody can blame a director for taking a bold swing far outside their comfort zone, Borderlands' failure proves beyond any doubt that Roth is better suited to helming lower-budget productions.
