Instead of helming Star Wars, Brad Bird passed to pursue his passion project, Tomorrowland. While he likely wont regret developing a movie he had long wanted to make, fans certainly dont share that same feeling. Forget a good track record, Bird had a golden history of films behind him, including The Iron Giant, The Incredibles and Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol. Everything hed done was fantastic and the inventive Tomorrowland looked to continue that trend. Unfortunately, something along the way didnt click, critics thought it didnt live up to its potential and audiences didnt show up in big enough crowds to justify its massive budget. Tomorrowland has been overblown as a bigger failure than it was, especially because the film itself is not terrible, its just not great either. Brad Bird is going to continue to make films, and most of them will probably be excellent, but that doesnt mean 2015 wasnt tough on him. Working in animation has taught Bird than anything is possible, but Tomorrowland may have shown him reaching just a bit further than he could grasp. Without a doubt, Bird will find a way to right the ship.
