For whatever reason, Roberto Orci and his writing partner Alex Kurtzman have been behind a huge number of blockbusters in recent years. But for every Star Trek and Mission: Impossible III they wrote, they were also responsible for films like The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Cowboys & Aliens. While people were already iffy about Orci as a writer, audiences were certainly not interested in him as a director, where he had no meaningful experience. So when he was poised to take on the directors chair for Star Trek Beyond, the reaction was overwhelmingly negative. Shortly thereafter, whether as a result of this reaction, or an unhappiness with where he was taking the story, Orci was completely released from the film, replaced on both fronts. In summation, Orci was poised to get a big opportunity as a director for a major franchise film. Instead, fans wanted nothing to do with him and the studio quickly followed suit. Its entirely possible that Orci could be great behind the camera, but theres no doubt that this was a huge blow to him ever getting to prove that.
