10 Directors Who Will Ruin Upcoming Films
5. Joss Whedon - Batgirl
On paper, Joss Whedon might seem like a great choice to head up Warner Bros' Batgirl movie. He has a solid track record where superhero adaptations are concerned and appears to have burned his bridges with Marvel.
Whedon's appointment, however, comes with its own set of problems. For one, his style is all wrong for the DC Extended Universe, a problem that may present itself when Justice League lands later this year.
Warner has already muddied the tonal waters something rotten by following the darkness of the early Zack Snyder films with the more lighthearted Justice League, and a Whedon-helmed Batgirl will only add to the inconsistency.
The Avengers director's work is upbeat and full of sarcastic wit - see Firefly and Buffy the Vampire Slayer as examples. How is that going to work alongside Matt Reeves's The Batman, a superhero movie that's certain to be as dark as Gotham is crime-ridden?
Moreover, by appointing Whedon as Batgirl director, Warner has proven that it's learnt little from Wonder Woman's success. When it hired Patty Jenkins to head up Diana Prince's solo debut, DC beat Marvel to the punch by assigning a classic female superhero to a great female director.
This is the direction they should have gone with for Batgirl, and failing to take it is a huge missed opportunity.
