10 Directors With Ridiculously Inconsistent Careers

9. John Ford

It's certainly true that as cinephiles we love to romanticise filmmakers from the Golden Age of Cinema, presuming that there was a greater measure of artistry to their work than, say, the works of Michael Bay in the contemporary sphere. Still, while John Ford is one of the world's most acclaimed and iconic filmmakers, people constantly forget just how little of his corpus of work is actually worth remembering. Sure, Stagecoach, The Searchers, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and The Grapes of Wrath are all solid gold cinematic classics, but one must remember the nature of the original studio system, which denied directors much control and essentially had them churning out film after film, hence why Ford's filmography boasts an insane 144 works. Though there are enough masterpieces in there, Ford also has a wealth of scarcely-known flops (if also, quiet ironically, a bunch of great films that nobody has even heard of). He's not alone in that era; plenty of acclaimed filmmakers have a fleet of bad films to their name, but thankfully, contemporary audiences have been kind enough to forget the bad ones (or usually not watch them), and just keep the classics in mind.
