10 Most Disappointing Comic Book Movies Of All-Time
4. Spider-Man 3 (2007)
The original Spider-Man, released in 2001 and directed by Sam Raimi, was something of a marvel. It was the first comic book film to truly embrace the conventions of the medium it was striving to depict on-screen to massive success; it changed cinema because it told filmmakers, "look, this is what's possible now - we can make a Spider-Man movie and it doesn't look stupid!" Raimi followed that triumph with what is still arguably the best and most accomplished superhero flick ever; the endlessly entertaining and technically brilliantly Spider-Man 2. All of which meant that the levels of hype for Spider-Man 3 reached maximum overdrive in the months before its release. Of course, with so much hype, there is a lot of pressure to deliver, and it all got too much for the third chapter in Raimi's doomed trilogy. Spider-Man 3 tried to do way too much; there were an overabundance of villains, one of which - Venom - had been forced upon Raimi by the studio against his will. What we got was a muddled, overproduced and underwritten sequel that was not entirely without merit, but certainly left fans feeling mostly unsatisfied.
