Pixar are one of the best and most consistent movie studios in the world - at least, they were up until a few years ago, when the magic seemed to dry up to a noticeable degree. That's not to say that Pixar are making bad movies nowadays, and Monsters University is far from being a bad movie, it's just that their immaculate track record has been tarnished through the likes of movies like Cars 2 (very bad), and Brave (very mediocre by Pixar standards). Monsters University is the best Pixar flick since Toy Story 3, of course, but it's still hard to justify its existence. Fans of Monsters Inc. presumably hoped that that this sequel would do a good enough job of letting us know why Pixar decided to return to the world of the first movie, and though there are fun sequences and some beautiful visuals to be had, there's still a sense of "why?" inherent throughout. So, no, Monsters University doesn't come close to matching the original, and there's no denying the fact that we all secretly hoped it would. Does it come down to the notion that it just wasn't funny enough, perhaps? A fine effort, but still an overtly disappointing one.
