10 Disappointing Movies That Killed Our Nostalgia

1. Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace

Lucasfilm

Has there ever been a more disappointing cinematic release than Star Wars Episode I? The trailer was good enough to get even the most casual fan frothing at the mouth with anticipation. The cast of Ewan McGregor, Liam Neeson, and Natalie Portman seemed highly promising. On top of that, it was based on one of the most critically and commercially successful trilogies ever. In all fairness, The Phantom Menace had a lot to live up to. Arguably, there was no way it could match the expectations leveled against it.

By the time it rolled out into cinemas though, even the staunchest sceptics left amazed at just how badly the film held up to the original trilogy. Criticisms were made against The Phantom Menace's dull plot, wooden dialogue, and juvenile tone that didn't quite fit with its predecessors. Most notorious though, was the character of Jar Jar Binks. Lucas was accused of including the character purely for merchandising reasons, and the unfunny, irritating Gungang managed to be the CGI rotten cherry on top of this unsatisfactory prequel parfait.
