1. Salo (1975)
It could be argued that Salo is just one big exercise to nauseate the viewer with scene after scene of abuse, degradation, sadism and humiliation. The story concerns four wealthy fascist libertines who hole themselves up in a mansion with kidnapped children and prostitutes, perverts and degenerates. There then unfolds extremely nasty deeds perpetrated chiefly on the kidnapped children. The most vomit provoking scene comes whenever the congregation all sit down to a meal of human s**t. And this is the Libertine's idea of a great meal - the delicacy of human faeces. Well it may be yum yum yum to them but it is barf, barf, barf to us. Undoubtedly director Pasolini was trying to make a serious statement through coprophagy about the nature of Fascist Italy but it is lost on me as I hug the toilet bowl.
