2. Irreversible (2002)
Gaspar Noe's deep, disturbing and barely watchable film - Irreversible - is a non linear reconstruction of an evening that should have been delightful, but instead comes straight from the bowels of hell. The film follows Alex and Marcus who wake up happily together, Alex informs Marcus that she might be pregnant and he is happy. They go to a party with their friend Pierre that evening and Marcus starts acting like a dick whenever he has had a few bevvies. Alex is disgusted and goes to take the train home. She has the misfortune of stumbling across a man - Le Tenia (the Tapeworm) beating a transexual up. He turns his attention to Alex and viciously rapes and sodomises her. Whenever Marcus learns of this event, he is utterly appalled, devastated and angry as hell. Along with Pierre, he goes into the sleazy underbelly of Parisian life to get to Le Tenia. The most puke inducing scene of the film is when Pierre thinks they have found Le Tenia and beats an innocent man's head to a pulp with a fire extinguisher. Computer graphics were brought in to enhance the effects as a latex dummy proved to be quite silly. However they did it, the skull smashing scene is positively nauseating.
