10 Disney Movie Details Only Grown-Ups Would Notice

9. That Incest Reference In Hercules

You read that right: incest. Apparently no subject is too taboo for Disney to put in one of its movies. After handsome hero Hercules has taken love interest Megara out on a hot date and he’s awkwardly making small talk about their evening together he mentions that Oedipus play they went to see.

Now given that this is Ancient Greece he’s most likely referring to the Athenian tragedy Oedipus the King by playwright Sophocles. If you’re not up to speed with your Greek mythology you may recognise the play’s titular character from psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud’s more recent Oedipus Complex theory.

Put simply Oedipus is a dude who killed his father, shacked up with his own mother and then proceeded to have lot of incest babies with her. To give Oedipus his due, he did all of that inadvertently and when it came to light his mother-wife hanged herself while he blinded himself with a pin but still, it’s pretty inappropriate for a Disney movie.

Luckily, most kids don’t have in-depth knowledge of Greek mythology or Freudian theory so hopefully this flew over the whippersnappers’ heads.
