10 Disney Movie Mistakes You Can't Unsee
5. The Shadows Don't Match - Pocahontas
One of the hardest things in animation, whether it is 2D or 3D, is shadows. Not only do they have to match the object casting the shadow, they can grow, twist, or overlap depending on what's going on in the scene.
Matching shadows is so painstaking, viewers will forgive a film if it a shadow doesn't perfectly match. However, Pocahontas has a mismatched shadow that's SO EASY to correct and yet, the animators missed it. When Nakoma grabs Pocahontas' hand, there is a shot where the two girls are walking towards the guards with their shadows cast on the ground.
Although it's clear that Nakoma and Pocahontas are clasping hands, their shadows aren't. Apart from their feet, their shadows don't seem to be touching each other at all. This would be a tiny mistake if it was in the background but the shadows take up half the screen!
All the animators had to do to fix this blooper was move the shadow of one of the arms to overlap with the other. Even though this film has been released on video, DVD, Blu-Ray, and Disney+, the animators never fixed this slip-up.
