Beyond its beautifully animated African savannah, cute baby big cats and soaring Elton John and Tim Rice scored soundtrack, The Lion King is actually a dark tale about using murder most horrid to get what you want.

Scar, basically the feline version of a creepy uncle, kills his big bro Mufasa by plunging him into a stampeding herd of wildebeests to he can usurp him as king and later when the grown-up, prodigal son Simba returns from exile, apparently taking that old biblical adage ‘an eye for an eye’ literally, pushes Uncle Scar off a cliff into a raging brushfire below whereupon he is ripped apart by a pack of hyenas, thus reclaiming his rightful throne.

The message is clear: it’s perfectly fine to kill people for your own gains. Coveting your workmate Dave’s higher company standing and cushy salary? You should probably murder Dave. Jealous of your neighbour’s fancy car and house? Murder is the answer

Though considering The Lion King is partly based on Hamlet, Shakespeare’s tale of Danish regicide and treachery, it’s probably not surprising the cute cartoon is all about murder and backstabbing.
