10 Disney Villains Who Went Beyond Evil
Trying to stop all your dreams from coming true since 1937.
Everybody loves a good Disney villain. When watching these films as a child, it’s natural to want the good-hearted protagonist to succeed. But the more you watch them, the greater your appreciation grows for the enemies of the stories.
Disney villains are greatly varied right from their motives and origins. We’ve seen them in forms of animal, witches, warriors, royalty, sea creatures and even pure spirit.
The antagonist characters have become an enjoyable part of Disney movies for their theatrical nature and awesome costume designs (admit it, you’ve all dressed up as one of them at least once for a costume party, right?) and in some ways, we almost want to be like them. You wish you could have the confidence of Urusla and the sarcastic wit of Hades. In short, growing up is realising the villains are the real stars of the show.
However, this assortment of anti-heroes are the ones who basically belong in horror films. These brutes have done more than just concoct a few potions or attempted fraudulent schemes to get rich, they’ve done ANYTHING to achieve their goals even if it means graphic mass murder. It’s just lucky that (most of) these villains were part of an enjoyable, upbeat Disney villains to help mask just how wicked some of their crimes were.
10. King Candy/Turbo (Wreck-it Ralph)
The story of Wreck-it Ralph is one of Disney’s smartest in years, giving a rich background to what goes on behind the arcade games with some creative world building and it takes an interesting twist of using a video game villain who dreams of becoming a hero in a quest of travelling to other video games. In Wreck-it Ralph’s journey, we learn of the dangers of ‘going Turbo’ – a term which refers to an old racing character named Turbo who attempted to take over the brand new RoadBlasters game to the arcade out of pure jealousy but ended up getting both his own game and the new one unplugged.
Cut back to Ralph’s adventures, he stumbles upon The Sugar Rush game which is ruled by the eccentric King Candy. Inspired by Alice in Wonderland’s Mad Hatter, he doesn’t initially come off as physically intimidating but there is something mysterious about his motives as he is so strongly against the glitch Vanellope Von Schweetz from competing in Sugar Rush’s nightly race. King Candy will stop at nothing to prevent Vanellope from participating, going as far as hacking the game’s code and breaking up the friendship between Ralph and Vanellope if it means she can’t race.
By this point, King Candy doesn’t seem THAT BAD in comparison to some other Disney Villains. But when the long-anticipated race finally happens, all is revealed.
Vanellope thankfully gets to compete in the race and storms the lead until King Candy tails closely behind and attacks her. Vanellope glitches in a panic causing a very scary unmasking of Turbo – it’s an extremely unpredictable plot twist and shows just how spoilt Turbo always was. He got away with this because he erased the memories of all the other characters in sugar rush, causing Vanellope to be the hated outcast of sugar rush. What’s then left over is a terrifying battle between Wreck-it Ralph and Turbo in Cybug form, resembling some freakish crab-eseque creature.
In short, Turbo was a greedy hacker of great intellect and manipulation who would stop at nothing to have all the power, even if it meant ruining a little girl’s life. He was sadistic enough to force Ralph to watch the potential death of Vanellope as she was faced up against the horrid cybug.
It’s also heavy implied that he was responsible for the mass murder of many innocent characters since being Turbo, he got TWO arcade games unplugged. He’s a cheater, terrorist and a thief. Definitely more evil than fans realised.
