Set in a former Soviet Union country, Lilja 4-Ever follows the struggles of Lilja Michailova, a young girl who struggles to get by after being abandoned by her mother and left to fend for herself. After being offered a better life in Sweden she leaves her homeland but upon her arrival is imprisoned, raped, and forced to have sex with a string of men.
Lilja 4-Ever stands as one of the most saddening films ever made, and few other films have come close to matching it for its relentless bleakness. It's a tragic tale made all the more powerful by the fact that it was based on a true story, which itself was one story out of many thousands of others of children trafficked around the world.
