10 Do’s and 10 Don’ts For Choosing What Movie To Watch Tonight

2. Don't Let The Box Office Deter You

Big boys eat and small boys don't get to eat because the big boys steal their lunch money to eat big. It's kind of like that for movies. Big movies with mega budgets, which could range from $30 million to more than $200 million, flood ad spaces everywhere. Major studios can spend up $70 million to $80 million marketing blockbusters. Independent films, whose budgets can vary from the tens of thousands to a few million dollars, do not have the same luxury of spending a ludicrous amount of money on marketing. But that doesn't mean that an independent film is automatically a bad movie. Many independent films are critically lauded and find themselves getting attention at film festivals, and then getting picked up major studios. "Paranormal Activity" is an example of an independent film that was both entertaining, creative, and appealing to mass audiences. It proved its worth by amassing a ton of money at the box office and is enjoying its fourth installment worldwide. On the opposite spectrum, a film that will not make as much money or get as much publicity will quick die down in theaters and will be available On Demand or on Netflix or Redbox. So don't be afraid to choose a "poor" movie. You may find yourself wondering how such a great film didn't make more money in the first place. Do what I do. Sigh and blame "Twilight."

I'm a thinker/fantasizer who writes down his thoughts and fantasies hoping it makes sense to everyone else. Also I'm an aspiring screenwriter, but if I can work in film at all, I'd be happy. One day you may hear the name Ryan Kim and associate it with "Academy Award winning writer" or with "where's that guy with my coffee." If the latter comes true, please let it be Paul Thomas Anderson's coffee I'm getting.
