Leonard Maltin praised Ben Stiller’s 2001 original for its “funny gags, satiric ideas and eye popping production design” so he had every reason to look forward to this belated sequel. Instead, he walked out after about forty minutes.
Instead of funny ideas and satiric jabs, Zoolander 2 is a long haul through a succession of puerile jokes with a ton of gratuitous cameos from the likes of Katy Perry and Susan Boyle. It’s forced, unfunny and the kind of movie you make because your last film as director, a $90 million remake of The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty, tanked at the box office.
“I guess fashions change,” Owen Wilson says at one point. It turns out everything has a shelf life, and expecting the same jokes to be funny after fifteen years is really pushing it.
