10 Dumb Movie Trailers That Ruined The Film's Ending
8. Carrie (1976 & 2013)
Kimberly Pierce's adaptation of Stephen King's novel was marketed as a retelling faithful to the author's original story, though in reality it didn't differ much from Brian de Palma's 1976 version. While the casting of Julianne Moore as Carrie's deranged mother in the 2013 rehash meant more screen time for Margaret White, both films tread a similar path throughout, with all of the iconic scenes replicated.
Unfortunately, the new trailer also followed suit and was pretty much a carbon copy of the much-maligned original, in that it shows you all of the film's biggest and best moments in just a few minutes. When you remake a movie, you have the chance to right the wrongs made by the previous filmmaker, and the trailer for Brian de Palma's film made the mistake of giving away the film's bloody climax.
Both trailers show Carrie being humiliated in the shower at school and abused by her mother at home to the point that her powers emerge. This was where they should have stopped.
Instead, they both go on to show the film's now iconic finale in which Carrie, after being crowned prom queen, is doused in pig blood and proceeds to violently murder pretty much everyone in the room. It looks cool, sure, but it makes the hour and a half leading up to it a pointless exercise.
