10 Dumbest Characters In Disaster Movies

5. The Cop In The Library - The Day After Tomorrow

The Day After Tomorrow is an absolutely insane film full of questionable character logic, though nothing makes the brain hurt more than the subplot where Sam Hall (Jake Gyllenhaal) and hundreds of other survivors seek refuge in the New York Public Library.

Though Sam, the son of famed paleoclimatologist Jack Hall (Dennis Quaid), is smart enough to heed his father's advice and sit tight, a moronic policeman inside the library insists that they should leave and seek out a rescue party he believes is stationed nearby.

Despite Sam's pleading that they need to listen to him, the vast majority of the library's inhabitants follow the cop outside, causing them to freeze to death later in the movie.

The cop wasn't just stupid, though, he was negligent, using the assumption of authority that his badge implies to lead a ton of extremely scared and panicked people to their unnecessary demise.

Had they just hunkered down and burned some books in the comparative comfort of the library, all would've been fine.
