How They Die

Death by disobedience. You know those warning signs anywhere even remotely dangerous that you're supposed to blindly follow? Well, Riley, Grant and Stamford from Superman Returns are walking, talking examples of why you should always heed those sorts of warnings.

As the action in Superman Returns ramps up and Superman starts lifting the artificially created island, Lex Luthor tells his team to run to the chopper for safety immediately. Naturally, the henchmen decide they know better and attempt to retrieve their stuff before making their exit. Inevitably, their reward is being crushed by a giant falling column.

Why It's Dumb

Because all they had to do was listen. Who pauses in an evacuation to get their things? It's like Rule 1 of escaping peril. And yet they stop to pick up video equipment and money from a poker game (and one of Lex's still-lit cigars for added idiocy) making their collective demise inevitable.

Admittedly, henchmen aren't really SUPPOSED to be the sharpest tools in the box, but the fact that they openly disobey Luthor and end up immediately dead just makes his decision to rely on them - despite supposedly being a genius himself - pretty stupid.
