10 Dumbest Decisions In Fantasy Movie History

3. Touching The Palantír - Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King

Sauron's evil is the driving force behind almost every single plot point in the Lord of the Rings franchise, and there's countless awful decisions made during the trilogy by characters acting under the influence of his dark magic.

All that notwithstanding, there is one moment that's really glaringly stupid, and for more than one reason.

We see that the palantír has corrupted Saruman the Wise, and that's enough to let us know that it's a powerful artifact. So when the Ents attack Isengard and overthrow Saruman, and Gandalf arrives to find the palantír discarded, he quickly scoops it up to avoid it corrupting anyone else, but not before Pippin catches a glimpse of it.

Knowing the dangers it poses, Gandalf decides that the safest way to store it is to wrap it in his cloak and fall asleep clutching it, and that's dumb decision number one.

The second is Pippin waking in the middle of the night and touching it despite the Wizard's warnings of its danger.

Now, Pippin isn't shown to be the brightest of bulbs, but he certainly should have been smarter than that.
