10 Dumbest Decisions In Sci-Fi Movie History

6. Leaving A Violent Criminal Unguarded - Face/Off

Much like a Michael Bay movie, it's a dangerous game seeking out clear-cut, coherent logic in a John Woo film, and for the most part Face/Off is so ludicrously entertaining it's tough to care too much about the sheer stupidity of the premise.

But we all have our limits, and there's one scene where the character logic just doesn't work, like, at all.

The masterful action-thriller is of course set in motion by FBI Special Agent Sean Archer (John Travolta) assuming the identity of sociopathic terrorist Castor Troy (Nicolas Cage) by...wearing his face after undergoing a cutting-edge surgical procedure.

But for some reason, Troy is being held at the medical facility with zero security, allowing his men to rock up and coerce the doctor into transplanting Archer's face onto his own in a perfect swap, naturally creating a major problem for the real Archer.

Given that the film could've easily shown a sequence where Troy has a fleet of men show up and brutally murder a security detail, we're going to assume this was a case of storytelling economy above all else: Woo probably wanted to move onto the face-swap gimmick as quickly as possible.

But still, quite why any murderous criminal would be basically left to their own devices with defenseless medical personnel is anyone's guess.
