Defining Dumb Moment: Disobeying every rule in the mogwai care handbook

Pretty much immediately after coming into ownership of Gizmo, Billy Peltzer is informed by his dad of the three very strict but very basic rules of mogwai upkeep – don’t expose them to bright light or sunlight, don’t let them come into contact with water and never feed them after midnight.

Beyond that mogwais are a fairly low maintenance animal but can Billy abide by those three rules? Not even for a second. He starts out by almost instantly melting poor Gizmo by exposing him to bright light several times. Strike one.

Next, he lets clumsy Corey Feldman spill some water he’d irresponsibly left lying around all over Gizmo and caused the little fella to spawn a litter of evil mogwais. Completely disregarding he’s broken yet another rule and the freakish birth he’s just witnessed, Billy then takes one of Gizmo’s offspring to his former science teacher Mr Hanson to show off his new trick, thus creating more bad mogwais. He also fails to inform Hanson of the rules – strike two.

Third time unlucky, Billy proceeds to feed those wicked little critters after midnight. Granted, the bad mogwais messed with his clock but still – it was 11:35pm when he decided to give them a snack. That’s cutting it fine regardless. Strike three.

And that is how you end up with your small, picture-perfect town overrun with murderous gremlins. You had one job, Billy. One job.
