10 Dumbest Sci-Fi Movie Decisions (That People Survived)

4. Doc Brown Really Shouldn't Have Survived Back To The Future

Aliens James Cameron
Universal Pictures

In the first act of Back to the Future, Doc Brown and Marty McFly are surprised by Libyan terrorists, who show up to take vengeance upon the man who took their plutonium in exchange for a bomb that turned out to contain used pinball machine parts. As he sees them coming, he tells Marty to run, but he holds his ground.

While he was carrying a revolver, he clearly doesn't have any skill with the firearm, and the man is filled with lead, dying where he stood. Marty screams, "NOOOO," and begins to drive away in the time machine/Delorean. He makes his way back to 1955 and writes a letter for Doc, hoping to spare him his fate.

By the end of the film, Doc reveals that he read the letter and was wearing a bullet-proof vest. He should have died, but thanks to some time travel shenanigans, he survived. That's Back to the Future in a nutshell, and it all centers around Doc's idiotic decision to try and hold his ground.

Had he thought about it for a second, he should have also run to the Delorean and used it to escape. Granted, had he done that, the movie would have ended after 15 minutes, but it's still a dumb decision he shouldn't have survived.
