10 Early Predictions For 2018's Best Picture Oscar Nominees

9. Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Why It Will Be Nominated: Though every single core Star Wars movie to date has been nominated for at least one Oscar, only 1978's A New Hope has actually been nominated for Best Picture, but rather poetically, that's about to change some 40 years later.

With Rian Johnson directing, the promise of an epic plot twist and the inevitable emotional devastation caused by the farewell to Carrie Fisher's Princess Leia, if any new Star Wars movie can pull off a Best Picture nod, it's this one. Having world-class actors like Benicio del Toro and Laura Dern along for the ride sure doesn't hurt its chances either.

Why It Might Not: History isn't exactly on its side, and the Academy typically hates sci-fi films, so unless this one's really, really good, it could easily end up missing out.

Plus, The Force Awakens and Rogue One weren't screened heavily in advance for Academy members, which absolutely hurt their chances, and will likely do the same for The Last Jedi, no matter how great it is.
