3. The Papers

Why It Will Be Nominated: In the last decade alone, three of Steven Spielberg's movies have been nominated for Best Picture, which says nothing of the countless other times his films have been nominated for the big one over the years, even winning it with Schindler's List.

His upcoming dramatisation of the publishing of the Pentagon Papers boasts inherently timely subject matter, alongside its much-beloved director, and an impeccable cast headlined by Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep. Oh, and the script was written by Josh Singer, whose Spotlight went on to win Best Picture last year.

Why It Might Not: Singer's co-writer Liz Hannah is a pretty untested talent, but aside from that, this one basically feels like a slam dunk short of some unforeseen disaster.
