6. Boy Erased
Joel Edgerton writes and directs this adaptation of Garrard Conley's memoir, in which a young man (Lucas Hedges) is forced into gay conversion therapy for fear of being shunned by his friends, family and, of course, his church.
With a cast including Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe, Hedges and Edgerton himself, it sure doesn't want for awards-friendly talent, and with acclaimed source material to work from, this has the potential to be an easy Oscar smash.
The trailer looks terrific, and it's easy to imagine this ending up this year's big tear-jerking Oscar film that actually earns your tears and avoids the inevitable "Oscar bait" labels.
