10 Early Short Films From Modern Day Great Directors

2. Mae Day: The Crumbling Of A Documentary - Kevin Smith

mae day While Kevin Smith is maybe not the most established or most talented filmmaker in the world, he has a big following and I am one of them. I wouldn't say I love all of his movies but if you have ever heard him speak in public, one thing is for sure, the man is a storyteller. I am of the firm belief that every first time director should see his and long time producer Scott Mosier's first short film Mae Day: The Crumbling of a Documentary. Part of the documentary module at the Vancouver Film School, the co-directors decided to make a documentary about a transvestite going through a sex change. A potentially interesting subject matter for student documentary makers. However, the production fell apart due to poor planning and their subject dropping out. So instead of just throwing their hands up and giving up, the two students decided to convert the documentary into the story of how their documentary fell apart. What follows is a self-deprecating look at what happened that is genuinely hilarious, especially as someone who has seen a production fall apart before their very eyes once before. If you are gearing up to shoot your first film or just want a good chuckle, check out this short film. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzXED5p7Jzg
