2. "You Had Me At Hello" - Jerry Maguire
And now we're onto those movies that are truly embarrassing, because they're clearly not supposed to be. Cameron Crowe's Jerry Maguire is a fine, well-acted romantic drama that nevertheless drops the ball right at the finish line with a schmaltzy climax that bring Dorothy (Renee Zellweger) and the titular character (Tom Cruise) into each other's arms. Jerry arrives at her home to plead his case, reeling off a long speech that ends with the words, "You...complete...me", causing boyfriends the world over to cringe themselves into a coma. But it gets worse; Dorothy tells a tearful Jerry to shut up, and utters the immortal cornball line, "You had me at hello", causing the two to embrace and start their life together. It's embarrassing because Crowe is so confident that it's a genuinely stirring moment, and perhaps it was the first twenty times we heard it, but now it's just painful to listen to.
