Most of the emotional moments we've touched on so far have veered somewhere between mournful and joyful. However, there are also movie moments that bring you to tears from sheer pain.

Steven Spielberg's 1993 multi-Oscar winner Schindler's List is one of the most harrowing but essential films any viewer can sit through. The fact-based story from the darkest days of World War II casts Liam Neeson as Oskar Schindler, the German businessman and Nazi Party member who covertly used his business to rescue 1,200 Jews from the concentration camps.

There is an optimistic overtone to the story; the fact that one person, even the most unlikely of allies, can make a real difference in the face of seemingly insurmountable adversity. Even so, Schindler's List does not in any way hold back from the very real horrors of the Holocaust, and makes for almost unbearable viewing at times.

The one moment almost certain to prompt tears comes in the black and white film's distinctive use of colour with a single character: an unnamed Jewish girl in a red coat, first seen by Schindler when she's trying to hide from the Nazi soldiers in Kraków, and again when he sees her corpse carted away amongst a wagon load of the dead.
