7. Refugee Uprising (Children Of Men)

Universal PicturesIt comes as quite a big surprise that a film set in the year 2027 should end with such a gritty, realistic battle scene but this is typical of Children of Men as a whole package. The extremely entertaining 2006 film based on the P.D James novel is set in a dystopian future in which humanity teeters on the brink of collapse as our species has inexplicably lost the ability to reproduce. The UK we are told is the only stable nation with a functioning government and this has resulted in a deluged of asylum seekers from around the world seeking to escape their unenviable lot by finding safety on British soil however, from what we see of the UK in the film, everything isnt peachy here either. When Kee miraculously falls pregnant, Theo must help escort her to safety in a country where very few can be trusted. After fleeing to Bexwell, Theo and Kee become embroiled in a battle between the British army and the refugees which is so realistic that it outdoes many other films depictions of actual conflicts. In an absolutely spectacular, stomach-churningly tense sequence, the pair must flee as explosions and gunshots go off all around them. The films director Alfonso Cuarón made the well-informed decision to shoot the awesome battle as one continuous, uncut take clocking in at nearly 6-minutes. This heightens the realism of the gritty conflict between government troopers and rebels further still as it is though we ourselves are desperately running behind the pair of protagonists, willing to do anything to ensure the survival of Kees new born baby.
